Our year 10 Art students recently had the unique opportunity to participate in an outreach workshop hosted by the Oriel Mostyn Gallery in Llandudno. Led by the talented artist and educator Jwls Williams, the workshop was a celebration of innovative expression and cultural appreciation, immersing students in the current exhibition featuring Vanessa da Silva’s “Roda Viva.”
“Roda Viva,” is a thought-provoking showcase that explores the interconnectedness of identity, ancestry, and personal history. Drawing on her Brazilian heritage, Vanessa da Silva weaves together elements of music, dance, and memory, resulting in a body of work that is both visually stunning and deeply resonant.
During the workshop, students engaged in a variety of hands-on activities aimed at helping them discover their individual artistic voices. Through guided exercises, they explored techniques inspired by da Silva’s unique style, learning to blend their own stories and cultural legacies into their artwork. This approach not only fostered creativity but also empowered students to reflect on their identities and how these inform their understanding of art. The outreach initiative by Oriel Mostyn Gallery not only provided invaluable skills and insights for our Year 10 Art students but also ignited a passion for creativity that is sure to influence their artistic pursuits in the future. Looking ahead, we are excited about the potential for further collaborations and opportunities that will continue to inspire our students to explore, create, and express themselves through art.
