Lansio Arddangosfa Gelf Fawr

Last week we saw the launch of our schoolwide art project, ‘What’s it got to do with me?’. This project has been in progress for months, as every year group came together to create their own unique pieces based in the idea of an anti-racist Wales. This is a goal we are proud to work towards, and we hope to have inspired thought on the topic of racism within Conwy through what Ysgol Aberconwy’s students have created.

The launch was well-attended, with speeches from Council Chief Executive Rhun ap Gareth, Oriel Colwyn Curator Paul Sampson, and our own Headteacher, Ian Gerrard. Plenty of parents popped in to see their children’s work, and we hope many more families and friends will come by while the exhibition is open.

The artworks include portraits, paintings, drawings, photography, sculpture, and decorated slates.

‘What’s it got to do with me?’ is on display in the Conwy Council building at Coed Pella, with photography viewable at Oriel Colwyn, and is absolutely worth visiting for yourself to get the full picture. Each individual piece is a fantastic expression of the student who made it, but together each one forms part of a larger work and a powerful message about community. Especially the type of community we want to build for the future.

A video exhibit at the gallery features a voiceover where students were able to anonymously express their own experiences, and share their hopes for the future. We are pleased to extend an invitation to everyone to listen to what they have to say.
