For the past month, Muslims across the world have been taking part in Ramadan, by dedicating themselves to fasting from dawn to sunset. This year, Ramadan has fallen between February the 28th<\/sup> and March the 29th<\/sup>, though the dates change every year in accordance with the lunar calendar. The day after Ramadan is Eid al-Fitr: a holiday which marks the end of the fast with community celebration. This might mean prayers, parties, or plenty of food!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here at Ysgol Aberconwy, we\u2019ve also been celebrating for Eid, bringing the spirit of the holiday into our school community. Students have had a chance to try some traditional foods for themselves, with the school cafeteria offering some new treats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone has engaged with a range of colourful and creative activities across the school. Whether students have helped to bring our hallways alive with beautiful decorations, created a work of Eid-centric art, dabbled with calligraphy, or enjoyed listening to some traditional music, we have all come together to absorb what this holiday means and to take inspiration from it. Some students have even dived in headfirst \u2013 or perhaps handfirst! \u2013 and decorated themselves with temporary mehndi tattoos for the occasion. The mehndi station raised \u00a343!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eid al-Fitr is not just a chance to enjoy ourselves with delicious food and creative expression, but also a chance to familiarise ourselves with the wider community and share in part of a worldwide cultural celebration. Humanities and English classes across Ysgol Aberconwy took this opportunity to learn more about the origins of Eid, why it is celebrated, and what it means to people today. This research has helped us to learn more and develop a better understanding of the multicultural world we live in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
