International Women\u2019s Day is celebrated every year on March 8th. The event, which started in 1911, seeks to honour, promote, and inspire women and girls across the world. Wherever you live, gender inequality is an ongoing issue in modern life. Schools are a crucial environment for young people to learn how important equal rights are, and how they can be part of making the world a better place for everyone. Last week, Ysgol Aberconwy demonstrated what International Women\u2019s Day meant to them, with students taking a lead in the celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes across the school enjoyed learning about the historical fight for women\u2019s rights and the work still to be done in the world today. Students got to hear about well-known inspirational women, and were encouraged to think about the inspirational women they know in their own lives. Don\u2019t we all know someone who deserves a lot more appreciation than she gets? (Mums reading this, we\u2019ve got you in mind!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After learning why International Women\u2019s Day is important, students were then given a chance to create their own paper flower crafts in a tribute to the women and girls they admire. They were also able to create #AccelerateAction placards dedicated to their inspirations, with the reasons why they looked up to the woman they\u2019d chosen written on the card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The real highlight of Ysgol Aberconwy\u2019s week of celebrations has to be the painted handprint wall that was created in the school hallway. The purple handprints were added by students who encouraged teachers and staff to join them in leaving an impression for women\u2019s equality. The Ysgol Aberconwy student body showed so much support for this important cause, and has created a mural that will stand for years to come. Alongside the handprints, many of the students who took part added names or signatures, so that everyone stopping to look at the wall painting in the future will have a sense of the people who worked hard to bring it to life. We love to see young people proud of their work, and we love to see them passionate about changing the world for the better.
