Engaging with Local Governance

Members of the Ysgol Aberconwy Student Leadership Group were recently given the unique opportunity to step into the world of local governance, thanks to an invitation from the Mayor of Conwy (and our Head of Sixth Form), Miss Janette Hughes. This special visit to the Guild Hall allowed students to immerse themselves in the processes of town council meetings, providing them valuable insights into civic duties and responsibilities.

Upon arrival, the students were welcomed into the council chambers where official town council sessions take place. The Mayor took the time to explain the intricacies of town council meetings, including how agendas are crafted, decisions are made, and how different voices within the community influence local governance.

The students then enjoyed an interactive discussion led by the Mayor where they were eager to express their views on various pressing issues that concern them and their peers. Topics ranged from local environmental initiatives to school facilities, enabling students to not only learn but actively engage in discussions that could shape their community. Miss Hughes encouraged this dialogue, emphasising that the perspectives of young leaders are integral to the future of Conwy.

The Mayor then proudly assumed her role as Constable of Conwy Castle and took the students on a tour of this historical landmark. The visit to Conwy Castle offered an enriching glimpse into the town’s rich heritage, igniting the students’ pride in their local history. It was a perfect blend of learning about governance while appreciating the historical context in which these discussions occur.

As the students returned to school, they were buzzing with ideas and initiatives that they could propose, energising its members to take on their responsibilities with newfound vigour. They recognised the importance of being engaged citizens and saw how the lessons learned could be applied to enhance their own meetings within the school.

This experience highlights the essential role that schools can play in fostering civic responsibility among young people. By involving students in local governance, and by having a Student Leadership Council, Ysgol Aberconwy not only builds future leaders but also helps students to understand the impact their voices can have within their communities, encouraging them to think critically about the world around them and to take the initiative in their own lives.
