Head's Welcome

...Here at Ysgol Aberconwy we have the highest expectations of all our pupils in all areas of school life.  Academic standards are important to us and we expect all pupils to achieve the very best that they are capable of. This was demonstrated by the tremendous performance of our Year 11 pupils last year when 67% achieved the 5 A*-C benchmark. However, we also have the highest expectations of our pupils when it comes to behaviour, attendance, punctuality and uniform.

The pastoral system at Ysgol Aberconw y is extensive and innovative.  Each year group has a full time non-teaching Guidance Mentor.  Working from a key stage base these mentors are available throughout the day to respond to pupils concerns and to provide a direct contact point for parents.

As well as providing a sense of belonging and a medium for competition, the House System provides the structure for monitoring pupil achievement against their individual subject targets.  The four Houses, Crafnant, Dulyn, Hiraethlyn and Llugwy are named for the four tributaries of the river Conwy.  Pupils attend weekly House assemblies, compete for their House in a range of competitions and have their progress monitored and reported on by their Head of House.

We have a flourishing extra-curricular program.  This includes a full range of sporting activities in the school’s brand new state of the art facilities as well as music concerts and drama productions.  The school owns its own field centre in the hills above Aber and has an extensive outdoor activities program.  Visits are arranged at home and abroad including the annual ski trip, an expedition to the island of Jura and study visits to Europe and the U.S.A. The school also has a partnership with a school in Chongqing China.  There are links on this website to many of these.

For those of you who are parents of primary school children we know that the transition to secondary from primary school can at times be seen as daunting by some pupils.  We have strong relationships with all our partner primary schools and operate a special programme of events and activities to help smooth the transition process and provide continuity for your children.

The choice of school for your child is a crucial decision.  True knowledge about a school comes from understanding and seeing what actually goes on inside it.  This website provides lots of important information about the school but I strongly advise you to combine this with a visit to our open evening so that you can make a well-informed choice for your child.
