Ysgol Aberconwy pupils from years 10 to 13 studying Art, Design and Technology showcased their work at the Deganwy Quay Hotel on Wednesday, July 1st. The event was co-ordinated by Mrs Medwen Brookes with help from sixth form students Anna Parry, Ellie Markham and Rosanna Holland. It was certainly a night to remember with 38 exhibitions pieces, including paintings, furniture, storage and jewellery, a fashion show, music performances and the Design Awards.
Parents, Governors, staff, students and members of the public all supported the event creating an amazing atmosphere. Caravans Direct sponsored drinks for the event and the Catering students worked alongside their teacher Miss Abberley and the Quay’s chefs to produce appetising canapés. It was an eye-opening experience for the students and gave them the opportunity to experience industrial practice with professionals. “It was a great way to show all the parents what the students can achieve at Ysgol Aberconwy” stated Alex Barr a year 11 textile student and “it was a fantastic evening” added Nikki Calder. The GCSE textile group all agreed that it gave them more confidence and taught them how to plan an event as they had to set up the catwalk, seating and choreograph their show. The clothes shown on the night were based on a recycling theme and made purely from unwanted goods such as wrappers, old cds, magazines and newspapers.
As well as viewing all the items on display, guests were had to vote for their favourites to receive awards under various categories. The winning designs were announced at the end of the evening. All the hard work students had put into their products was rewarded that night with positive responses from all those who went and as student Courtney Veale pointed out the evening also “inspired their younger siblings to take Art, Design and Technology.” It also inspires the older generation too as we get to see the talent of tomorrow.
The Deganwy Quay and staff provided more that just a venue, they worked alongside the students, and Ysgol Aberconwy would like to thank them for all their support. The students of Aberconwy would also like to thank all the staff who were involved and supported them especially Mrs Medwen Brookes and Angela Laing, the DT technician who behind the scenes was an invaluable asset.
